Yesterday I accidentally flooded a corner of the emu yard. I’d left the hose running in one of their troughs and gone off searching for Tapper (the duck who keeps disappearing and returning from nowhere). When I came back, this is what I found!
The Emerys were in a state of absolute bliss!

I very rarely guffaw, but I just guffawed. This is a marvelous set of photos. Those birds are a hoot!
I can’t believe I used to worry about them if it rained – they love water even more than the ducks and geese do! Glad to have given you a guffaw!
Taking a bath once in a while won’t hurt…ha..ha.
They like to roll in the mud too!
I didn’t know emus liked water. Lucky for them and you.
I didn’t know either – well, not at first!
Oh thank you for the great photos! I’ve seen emus but never bathing… I get a kick out of birds bathing anyway, they all seem to do it with such gusto.
Yes, it’s hilarious!
Makes sense to me. Even the littlest birdies like a bath, and especially when it is hot! The only birds I know who don’t like the water particularly are the chickens and they bathe in dirt. EW!
You’re right about the chickens and the dirt – first time I saw a chook do that ‘roll around in the dirt’ thing I thought something was wrong with it!
Sometimes they do that and then stretch out flat in the sun, legs akimbo and unmoving…
I have on more than one occasion thought them dead! Then, on running out to check, they hop up and go on like nothing was up. I often imagine them thinking, “Ha-ha, made’ya look! 😀
The alpacas do that too when they are lying in the sun – I run over in a panic and they leap up!
Awww, they are probably certain you are about to attack them! lol…
Hahaha!
I do wish we weren’t thousands of miles apart. I think you and I would enjoy being neighbors! Thank goodness for the internet or I shouldn’t have met you at all, my friend. ~L
I agree! Please let me know via email how things are going.
Roger that! I find out tomorrow…
Okay
Haha, this is hilarious 🙂
When are you coming to visit?
You’re going to have to be more forgetful from now on.
Yes!
Hahaha – how funny, Julie
They’re doing it again tonight – this time I flooded their pen on purpose!
The only place I can see exotic birds at the moment is at Edinburgh Zoo! They do have Darwin’s rheas which are South American Emu-like birds.
Ah, the rheas (says she having no clue!) Yes, Victoria, from a blog I follow, told me about them. I guess I better look it up so I can be better informed!
Ahhaha. When they are wet, they look like something from Dr. Seuss!
You are right – I was wondering what they reminded me of – Seuss it is!
You can see them here at Edinburgh Zoo.

That zoo sounds like a great place!
That’s so cute!!
They’re so much fun, when they’re not wandering off!
I agree with Linda. I think you might have accidentally discovered the muse of Seuss.
Yes! I wish I could draw. I’ll have to get doudou to sculpt a soaking wet emu!
At least it was mud…and not manure!
Yes and you know what that’s like – hehe!
I had no idea emus like water so much! I learn something every day.
Neither did I to begin with it – they will love the winter because it rains a lot!
Orrrrrrrr. Poor things.
But they do look kind of funny in their ‘wet-suits’ (of feathers).
They love water – who would have known?
