The stolen gramophone

on August 19, 2012

For some reason, I have woken up in the middle of the night for the last few nights, boiling with anger against the person who stole Anthony’s portable gramophone.

I’m not sure why I am now so angry when the disappearence of the gramophone happened nearly two years ago.

Anthony, toddler Ming and I bought this gramophone from an antique dealer years ago and it is one of the many things that has enlivened our lives, and entertained visitors over and over and over again. It came with lots of old records and we used to bring it out to the front veranda and entertain people.

But, one day, it disappeared.

I vividly remember us showing it to one of the numerous agency employees who would come once a fortnight to either clean or cook or keep Ants company while I was at work and Ming was at school. Well, she absolutely loved that gramophone and wanted one just like it.

One day, I had to take Ants to the doctor’s and, as it never occurred to me not to trust this agency employee, I just told her not to bother locking the house as we would be back soon. She then told me it was her last day of working for the agency because she was resigning, so I just gave her a bit of a hug and said thank you.

And we never saw that gramophone again.

I have decided to find another one soon so that I can take it into the nursing lodge.

    Humanity comes through again…cynically speaking.

  2. Well that’s just maddening! Sometimes things bother me again long after it’s happened…

It is a sad day when we can’t trust anyone in our homes….

what a terrible thing to do to someone who helped keep food in your house and your bills paid. people!!!!

So disappointing. I like to have trust in human nature …. stuff like this boggles my mind 😦 xxoo

  6. It’s a reminder that there are all kinds of people out there. Luckily, there are more good ones than bad.Maybe that woman needed the gramophone more than you did. I hope that whenever she plays it she feels guilty about what she did. Probably sold it though.

  7. Do you still have the records or did the rotter take them too? If you’ve got the same one it would be fantastic for Anthony if you get a new player as they’ll all help to bring back those memories.

I remember them,, shame,,, age old following

  9. I suppose, though it’s doubtful, there is a chance that she is not the one who took the gramophone. Too bad you can’t do some detective work to see if she has it.

There is nobody else who could have possibly taken it. If only I knew her last name I would detectivish her!
On the other hand I am going to feel pretty stupid if I find it in one of Anthony’s hiding places!

I know how you feel. I had a cameo ring that was brought over during WWll by my uncle Dan. It was grandma’s, then my mother’s and eventually mine. It was carved with a perfect blush on the cheek. Someone broke into our home and stole all my jewelery!

I clicked “like” … don’t register me – the story of my life .. continued today too. I really hope you find one … so upsetting that there is no respect for others peoples property anymore. The whole society is at it.
    Look at Ebay.au – http://www.ebay.com.au/sch/Radio-Gramophone-Phone-/29832/i.html?_trkparms=65%253A12%257C66%253A2%257C39%253A1%257C72%253A6422&rt=nc&_nkw=gra

  12. I’d be outraged too Jules. Things like that make me agry because here she created this sense of trust. Obviously notifying the agency was a bust. I hope the agency did due dilligence by spreading the news about this woman.

You are some wife. So loving, so tender in thoughts and actions.

  13. it is funny how things come back to haunt us – especially when it was something that was so enjoyed – I think you have a great idea in buying a new one to create new (if different) memories

I had actually left this post…but had to come back. #1 – I’m tickled you are on to another one, viveka had the right idea, would have suggested the very same. #2 – it’s a good thing i don’t live near you…all the sense in the world is a fine thing…but i don’t claim to have much of that when people hurt someone i love. sorry, but i would have knocked her flat, proof or no proof, and DARED her to do something about it. (insert my usual colorful language now).
    grrrrrrrrr

  15. Pathetic woman. To steal is to confess to all that you don’t believe enough in yourself to acquire something through legitimate means.

That’s a vile abuse of trust. Good luck with your search for a replacement, they can’t be easy to find but that will make the hunt that much more fun.

Please post a picture of the new one when you find it – I love records and record players
