“My side of the mountain”

I have provided a link below to information about my favourite childhood movie.

My side of the mountain chronicled the story of a young boy escaping his suburban lifestyle to subsist in the woods. My favourite scene is when he tames the falcon, but I can’t seem to find that particular clip; alas, I can’t even find the movie.

I was around eight or nine. We had just moved from Sydney, Australia to Toronto, Canada.

When I saw this movie, I wanted to be that boy so much that, in my imagination, I was him. I was the kid living in the woods with all of the animals and I was the one who tamed the falcon.

And, even though now, years later, I have forgotten most of the movie, its premise still grabs me by the throat and makes me yearn!

Wow Julie, this was my favourite book when I was a child. I loaned the book from the school library and read it from cover to cover so many times! Like you I could visualise that kind of existence – it really appealed to me. My friends and I would take off early in the morning having packed food and drinks, and would explore the bush until dark. We fashioned bows and arrows from the blackboy spikes, caught minnows and jilgies in the creeks and picked flowers. I never new there was a movie released – I just lived through the pages of the book! I have never, ever heard anyone else even mention this story before – what a blast from the past! 🙂

In the 60s my teacher read this book to us in class. I have always loved that story, and like you wanted to be that boy. Sigh…

I read the book for the first time with son aged about 10. We both loved it, I think he thought he was the boy because we lived on the farm in Brookhampton and rehabilitating raptors was part of our life. We kept birds that had been caught or injured, kept them in a large aviary for 6-8 weeks and then released them. I didn’t know anything about the movie but would love to see it.
