Mr Photogenic

on December 17, 2011

In case you haven’t noticed (ha!) I am very much a ‘beginner’ when it comes to photography, but I now have a new camera and I am trying to do a better job.

So I was sitting with the emus this evening, doing the cabbage-taming thing and trying to take some incredible photos. I was thrilled because, not only were they all taking the cabbage out of my hand and letting me pat their furry backs, but they didn’t seem to mind being photographed.

I was quite surprised that the same emu who was scared of my voice just the other day seemed to love having his photo taken. He got closer and closer to me, and I was just beginning to think, ‘wow, he really loves me now’ when he bit the camera, as you can see below.

It’s okay – I mean, I fell off the tractor tyre I usually sit on, dropped the camera, and scared all of the emus, but when the cabbage in my lap went everywhere, they soon came back. ‘Mr Photogenic’, however, wasn’t the least bit interested in the cabbage and kept looking for the camera which I had to quickly hide in my pocket.

These are lovely, especially the last one.

Yeah, that one coming off the camera looks pretty intense… if I were you, I’d keep a good strong hand on that camera. If he eats it, it wouldn’t go through!

Emus are great fun to photograph (as I found out at the zoo the other day). I wonder if your emus can see a reflection of themselves in the camera lens and think it’s another emu. If they’re territorial, they might be trying to chase the ‘foreign’ emau away?

    Just a thought.

Your new photos come out very squashed on my computer screen (tall and slim) and I’m wondering if you need to resize them to put them on your blog, Julie? (you can edit this question out if you wish). I always resize my photos to between 500 and 650 pixels for the internet. I have a large 27″ screen with a high resolution, so they shouldn’t have a squashed appearance, like I’m getting.

Thanks Victoria – I am curious to see if others are getting the squashy photos too. In future I will edit them to the size you suggest (if I can figure out how!) Much appreciated – Julie

Go into edit, click once on the photo you want to edit, and then you can click on the icon to the left of the photo (the one that is not the international sign for ‘no’) once there you can choose to make the photo any size you like. Click save and you will have a smaller photo. 😉

Okay – thanks – it seems to only be the photos from the new camera – older photos (which I’m still using) seem ok. Thanks again!

I suspect they are like ostriches in more than just looks. Ostriches will grab anything shiny, including the earrings out of your ears.

Now about that Emu! I am so glad it was your camera and not your eye! 🙂 ~ Lynda
