Flexibility

on February 23, 2012

Geese, with their long necks, have incredible flexibility. In the photo below, Pearl (on the left), appears to be giving herself a little hug!

The biggest drawback after scoliosis surgery is loss of flexibility. Son has had 12 of his 24 vertebrae fused, so this area of his back is now ramrod solid. The good news is that this middle area of the spine doesn’t require much flexibility anyway and Son still has the top and bottom of his spine to flex, dance, bend, lift, so he still has his shoulders and hips. If he wanted to, he could even preen himself the way Seli does in the following photo.

I love watching the geese preen themselves. This is Godfrey and Seli below. As you can see, Seli does actually have a head!

Okay, so Son is not a goose, but he will still be dancing, preening and spreading his wings again!

Okay, so he might not have as much flexibility as Pearl (picture below again) but you never know!

Just found out he can get out of hospital today! It would have been nice if they’d given me a bit of notice as I am 2 hours away – have had to arrange for relatives to pick him up and have him overnight…. still waiting to hear….

Grrrr… what is it with hospitals? They used to do that with us when we were taking care of Bob’s mother, and to me when Bob was in and out of the hospital a few years back. They call and they want you to just come right over and pick them up. Never mind you have a job, or the long drive…

They just want to free up the bed space! (Which they came right out and told me over the phone!!!)

Then again, in your son’s case, might we assume that he is healing rapidly and that is why they want to let him out early? ~ L

You are right – they needed the bed!

That’s just what the world needs. Consistency in Hospital care and practice. 😦
        Sigh…

I’m still grateful for what has been done for Son, but it was extraordinarily short notice!

    Hi,
I really love that photo of Seli where the head has totally disappeared, that is amazing how they can do that. 🙂

I can see you love watching birds as much as I do, Julie. I never knew Bird Watching would be such a big part of my life and so much fun. It’s fascinating. I walked to my U/S appmnt via the Botanic Gardens today. I had a solid 2 hours of watching the ducks & seagulls digging for worms, pecking and fighting each other and a host of other activities. I took some more photos (of course), but I worry that sometimes the followers of my blog might get bored with photos of the same old ducks.

I never get bored hearing about your feathered community on the farm,

I got very stiff after my back surgery (despite physio and exercise), but I have found that it really helps to alternate activity in the day. Sit for a while, stand up & stretch, bend a little (taking photos). If watching tv I try to get up every advert. break which is approx every 7 mins. When watching a movie on tv the first advert. break comes 20 mins after the start of the movie, and then approx every 7 mins thereafter.

I’ve also found lying in a hot bath every morning (instead of a shower) relaxes muscles & relieves some of the back pain. A hot water bottle with a woolly cover with a few drops of lavender oil on the cover eases pain better than an ice pack. I have all sorts of little ways to help ease stiffness and pain.

I feel much much worse lying in bed. Never lie in bed if you’ve got back pain (unless you’re really desperate and genuinely can’t get out of bed). Please pass that on to Son (ie when he has improved from his surgery – try to keep on the move if possible).

  4. I’m so glad your son is thru the surgery part and onto the healing. With your wonderful self, he will surely bend every which way.
    peace n abundance,
