I just found this ‘leftover’ photo in my files, ready to delete because it’s so blurry. It was taken ages ago before I knew that Phoenix 1 (golden pheasant) had ‘a thing for’ Malay (hen that looks like a rooster).
I have since done a bit of delving into whether pheasants and chickens can make a go of things and, apparently, yes they can but the eggs will be unfertilized. While I was doing this extraordinary googling, I also discovered that geese and ducks can also have relationships but, again, none of the eggs will be fertile.
So things are beginning to make more sense around here. The only problem now is that there are 9 eggs in the middle of one of Husband’s many shrubs and we don’t know whose eggs they are!

They really do make an attractive couple. I saved the photo and took it over to Picnik and it sharpened up nicely, so if you want to keep it as a record of their strange-but-wonderful relationship, you could get a bit of that blurriness out of it.
I am, once again, going to sound like a real novice but who or what is Picnik? I will look it up and try it out. Thanks so much!
Here you go: Picnik.
Picnik will be closing soon, but I’ll send you a link to a good substitute later.
When you go to Picnik, click the “upload” button, upload your photo, and then go to the basic edits tab. I used “sharpen” but you can play around with all of them to see what you like.
Then, save the photo to your computer. I usually rename it so I maintain the original as well as the edited version.
Thank you sooo much – you are a legend!
Sounds like a recipe for scrambled eggs.
Tomorrow morning!
Hmmm…is there a quest to find out who those eggs belong to? Amusing post!
I’m keeping a close eye!
Isn’t someone supposed to be guarding those eggs? Or, do I just have no understanding of the habits of fowl?
It looks like the layer of the eggs has abandoned them. They might be the elusive hen’s or the now elusive Tapper’s or they might even be guinnea fowl eggs. I wouldn’t have a clue but I’m leaving them there just in case they miraculously hatch!
I love seeing these photos…my bird fix!
Glad they’re giving pleasure to people other than me!
The right one is a weird chicken!!!
Haha!
How beautiful the bird on the right is.
Oh yes, Phoenix is my darling!
