Too much information

on April 3, 2012

A couple of people were curious about the pigmentation I mentioned in yesterday’s post (pre-surgery, we were told that Son had a couple of tell-tale ‘spots’ that were warning signs of scoliosis). Anyway, he allowed me to take a photo of the biggest of these which is on the inside of one of his elbows. He has a couple more of these elsewhere.

I remember now that they told us these were ‘cafe au lait’ spots. Okay so I looked it all up and found this site which I wish I hadn’t because, if the information is correct, it means that Son has this neuro-whatever condition which may have come from me. After all I’m the one with the freckles!

Argh!

All so interesting Julie – who would think freckles could be a pre-cursor for neuro/spine issues! Good news is that son was treated exactly the way the article indicates – and hopefully will not have anymore repercussions. Thanks for sharing — good info for others to be aware of!!

Heavy. Everything I have learned from you makes me think that my Auntie has scoliosis. Her back has been a debilitating ‘s’ curve for years. 😐

Oh! I wanted to see the pigmentation, but thought it would be too invasive to ask, so thank you for providing this. But honestly, kids get al of their traits from their parents’ DNA, and that DNA was passed from the grandparents, and that DNA…etc. And if it wasn’t freckles, it could’ve been moles, or some other such thing. It all carries brilliance as well as pitfalls. Fortunately, you have each other. I hope all your news i good from here on out.

It was pretty precious to see that photo. You see them on big posters in doctors’ surgeries, but to see this close up was great. I have quite a few moles & marks. I’m thinking they’re okay. As long as they don’t change, I reckon I’ll be okay.

Am going to click on your link now. V. interested…

Yep, there comes a point where you just need to stop searching and reading! Glad it doesn’t stop people from researching and coming up with treatments and cures….something new every day.

The Internet can open a can of worms, sometimes, with medical things – but then it can also lead to solutions/treatments we might never have known about, as has been my experience recently

I guess I had better check my son. I think he has one of these. YIKES!!!

Thanks for sharing this. The more info available, the better.

  10. Jules I know the feelings of being a parent that knows she has passed on health issues to my girl’s. It’s not a comfortable feeling to be certain.

When our oldest daughter started to develop signs of endometriosis I was quite upset, Having myself to have a complete hysterectomy at age 35 I prayed this was not going to be the case for daughter #1. Sadly by 28 yrs of age she could take no more and her body had started to change the endometrial tissue, a celluar change began so she had to make a choice fairly quickly. No choice really but she and my son in law did not have time to process not being able to have nay more children.
As I watched my baby struggle with not being able to have no more babies herself this was so hard. I felt so responsible/ It was my first experience with what I passed down was not always positive. But the girls are all mine, there is no denying whose children they are when you look at them. That I passed down too and when I see their faces I am reminded of my own mom.

Being a parent is yet one of the most magical experiences of a lifetime and the most heart breaking.

    Hugs today~

Interesting information! Without the background info, I would have thought birthmark or sun damage.

  14. My mother-in-law is 81, and was just told that she has scoliosis. None of us can believe that no one mentioned this to her before. I am going to have to subtly check the next time I see her for the tell-tale mark!

I’m gobsmacked! But maybe they didn’t know back then – apparently you need a few of those marks as an indication – obviously far too late for your ma-in-law.

Interesting info on those spots. I have a couple of those type of spots myself (but my scoliosis is nowhere near the level of your Son’s pre surgery spinal shape).

I must follow up and read more about them.

  16. My favorite cousin had scoliosis when she was 17 but I never heard about any spots. Interesting.
