Tomorrow is the only day of the year that everything is closed for business – all the shops, all the pubs, all the petrol stations – so I guess it is our country’s tiny gesture towards the religious significance of this crucifying day ….
I always save up all my sadnesses for this day because it seems more emotionally economical to do so. After all, I can’t miss my father, who died when I was 19, every day; I can’t miss my misspent youth every day; I can’t miss my inviolable faith every day; I can’t miss Son’s babyhood every day; I can’t miss Husband the way he was, every day.
So tonight, I am doing my sad-missing-stuff thing before Good Friday so that tomorrow I will be able to stretch out both of my arms as far as they will stretch in order to embrace something new, in order to wrap them around what is next, in order to kiss the morning.
Tomorrow, I pick Husband up from the nursing lodge after I leave Son with my mother. I have made fish mornay (Husband’s favourite) for lunch. It will be a good day.

I have a confession to make, I had no idea Good Friday was coming up. Guess that I have cut myself off from the rest of the world. It could also be that there are very few religions that observe Good Friday here in rural China. Best wishes.

Focus on the happy times you have had and don’t dwell on the sad times. Sad times happen to everyone but the happy times are much better. I always remember the following Bible verse:

10 Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. 11 Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes.

I love this post. I agree with the Baroness that your idea of saving all your sadnesses for one day is a beautiful one. It is much more economical emotion-wise, and I’m always looking for a way to better dismiss my low days.

I hope Easter Friday is a very happy day for you too. I haven’t had Fish Mornay for years and years (maybe 40?).
My Mother used to put dried breadcrumbs on top with knobs of butter before putting it in the oven. I vaguely remember that lovely crispy topping and remember how enjoyable it was biting into the fishy sauce underneath. I assume you would probably make it in a similar way to my family. (My Mother grew up on a dairy farm in northern Tasmania).
Yes that’s the dish all right – I learned it from Husband’s mother so it is very oooooooolld!!!!
It is good to have a day to reflect, so that you can clear the path for new vision. Enjoy your holiday and your hubby home for your special fish (even if I do not know what it is). – DogDaz

Yes, well, it has worked so far (this weekend at least!)
I’m not aware of any businesses that close for Good Friday here. Back in Texas some did, but it’s more expensive to live in California, so these businesses tend to stay open and make money for the day.
Maybe it’s just us!
