Music to the ears

on April 14, 2012

I am grinning from ear to ear because in the very next room Son is singing at the top of his lungs, practising a song. He has his earphone things in and is thumping the table and has no idea how DREADFUL the noise is because he obviously can’t hear himself! Usually he can hold a tune (well hopefully, as he is now doing a Certificate 4 in Music, learning bass guitar, singing and band), but tonight he seems to have reverted back to some sort of primal-ness.

Oh, he’s stopped – joy and bliss and peace. I want to kiss his feet … oh no, he’s started singing again at the top of his lungs and it’s AWFUL! He sounds like a broken chainsaw or a tractor falling into a ditch.

Nevertheless, it is a very happy sound – not particularly soothing but full of loud joy so I have just stuffed some tissues into my ears so that my heart can absorb these new vibrations … because this is the first time for over a month (since his spinal surgery and Husband going into the nursing lodge) that I have heard him HAPPY! YEEHA!!!

  1. SO good to hear that, even if it is an awful noise. I don’t think you’re meant to listen anyway – even if it can’t be helped. Music can be a great healer of the soul. (In this case, mainly HIS soul. Yours might need some therapy if the “tractor falling into the ditch” noise goes on too long.)

Oh no – for some reason your comment reminded me that my blog is automatically linked to facebook so I always eradicate anything to do with Son so as not to embarrass him – thanks! Gotta go straight to FB yikes!

YAY!! Jules. I get it!! My girls have been vocalists since very little and it was so clear to me over the years that this passion was so much more than simply art or talent…it was food for their souls! Just like with your son, during those times they have drifted from their music for whatever reason, I knew they were not emotionally grounded. So hoping he sticks with it – Let the vibrations continue!! And yes – sometimes earplugs work wonders when volumes get out of hand in the house. They always thought I was insulting them, but truly they had such powerful little voices it was too much for my nervous system. The the theatre, on stage I could listen forever:) So excited for this good bit of news for you and Son!

You are so right and your girls sound wonderful! Son has always and only wanted to perform so to see (hear) him back at it is wonderful! How old are your girls now?

  3. It’s always fun to have my son (aka George Clooney) home. For about three days!

Your son looks like a Rock Star!! I mean that in a good way. 🙂

I just love men who play music! Music is a great outlet for stress, and I’m glad Son is back into the swing of his music. He’s a cute one! The reason I fell in love with Rick was because he played drums for a rocknroll band in college. Oh my gosh! I was such a groupie.

That is great news indeed and I am very glad for you hon. Music really soothes the soul. 🙂
    *hugs*

Isn’t he too well adjusted to be a rock star? Aren’t they almost always angry young men? Maybe you should kick him to help his career.

  7. I am convinced that no matter how bad the singing is, it can always uplift your heart. Especially in your situation!

Yes but let’s hope his singing gets back to the way it was before the op. The surgeon said because his lungs and other organs has now shifted it could affect his voice – weird! Luckily he couldn’t hear himself and luckily he is unsubscribed – haha!

    Progress! Onwards and upwards 😀

What a happy post! It may not be the best music, but the sheer exuberance of it all is the sound of your son coming back to himself! Music does have the ability to heal us – what’s that old saying? “If music be the food of love, play on!”

Blessings can come in off key, but blessings they are, and I am happy they are falling on your ears! 😉

  11. Sounded like me when I’m in a happy mode. A simple humming is enough..haha. Good day to you! Your story is inspiring, its a family thing. It reminds me of my family, my little brother to be exact.. :). Anyway, your son is cute!

  12. It’s hard to beat exuberance, even when it’s awkward or off key!

  13. The little (and awful) things in life are so much better when we put them into perspective.
