Waiting

on April 16, 2012

There may, or may not, be some subliminal, symbolic significance to this crooked photo of Tapper sneaking away from her eggs to have a quick dip, but I probably just had the camera the wrong way around. In fact, as this photo took itself some time ago (because I’m sure I didn’t do this intentionally) and I just found it on my desktop, I thought I’d put it in this post just for the hell of it!

I am waiting for the hospital to ring me to confirm that Husband is now okay enough to go back to the nursing lodge. I have tried ringing him twice but no answer so I’m not sure what is going on exactly and I’m not very good at waiting.

If you aren’t already familiar with Samuel Beckett’s famous play, Waiting for Godot, it’s worth a google. If you are familiar with it then you will know why I feel like I am inside that play, not in a horrible, negative way, just in a waiting-for-nothingish way!

Like Tapper’s eggs – are they ever going to hatch?

I had a lot of birds waiting this morning outside the back veranda but eventually they gave up on me! It’s okay, I will get them some cabbage a bit later in the day….

Ah, the hospital just rang but it wasn’t what I expected; it was the physiotherapist saying she couldn’t continue to treat Husband unless I paid the bill from last year. I was so embarrassed and admitted I hadn’t opened the mail lately, then I paid it immediately on the phone with my mastercard and apologized for keeping them waiting! Argh.

I wonder if there is a philosophy out there that helps people to wait in a way that is fruitful rather than frustrating….

Still waiting but unsure of what exactly I am waiting for – hehe!

  1. Like the Tapper photo, it seems like your life is a bit askew right now, but it will straighten out with time.

Julie, I’m sure you know that expression ‘A watched kettle never boils’.

Well, I’m going to add………Uhmmmm……..my brain’s gone mushy…….’An anticipated phone call never rings’………’A medical specialist appointment is never on time’.

    I could go on…..

Love the middle photo in this post. It shows the variety of birds in your care. (I am STILL trying to get a good shot of a Golden Pheasant at Melb. Zoo by the way – the d…. bird keeps scurrying into the deep shade of the enclosure every time it sees me coming). The worst of it is that it is a relatively small enclosure about 12 feet square and 15 foot high – you’d think I would have scored a good shot by now (big grin).

Fortunately in the UK the NHS pays for most things. Physio would definitely be covered.

However, our taxes are very high – sometimes a lot of people get very annoyed about.

Oh! I guess every country is different? I am still learning the ropes with the medical system – mostly good but sometimes a bit mysterious!

  4. I actually love the photo the way it is.

This is for you: I hope you don’t mind.

[While fidgety children may be told that “patience is a virtue,” a University of Arkansas philosopher has found patience to be much more profound than simple, passive waiting. Rather, patience is “the living heart of ethics.” In a presentation to the Society for Phenomenology and Existential Philosophy last month, Irene McMullin discussed patience as a “neglected virtue,” little examined by philosophy or society at large.

“I call patience a neglected virtue because we don’t value it as much as courage or generosity because it involves a withholding of self,” McMullin said. “In business, for example, we don’t recognize good management as patient, such as when a manager steps back and lets others be part of the creative process.”]

Just wanted you to know I admire you. (and no I don’t think you are always wonderful.) : )

The physiotherapist is a lot more patient than the birds 🙂 The capacity to understand: one of the gifts of being human

Ah – Godot. I have a cactus named Godot. He has a friend named Godette – a girl cactus, in my imagination. I nearly delayed a vacation two years ago while I waited for Godot to bloom. Then I decided to take him with me. Finally, I brought him indoors and put him away from the sunlight. It slowed him down enough for the bloom to delay.

He has three buds this year rather than one or two – apparently repotting is a good thing. 😉

    • jmgoyder says:

I think it’s hysterical that you have a cactus called Godot – can you write a post about him/her?

      • Tammy says:

Oh this is fabulous – I think you should have a party for Godot, too, for being such a good cactus And maybe, Julie, maybe you can find a small thing to celebrate to help your 24/7 conundrum. I have no good advice, I just don’t think there is anything easy about what you are going through. Keep writing, lady.

      • jmgoyder says:

        Thank you very much, Tammy!

      • shoreacres says:

I already did, but I think I’ll repost it when the other blooms come along. Godette’s putting on her spring blooms, too. I’ll have to ponder this!

    I LOVE THAT WHITE PEACOCK!

Waiting for Godot, a classic example of Theatre of the Absurd.

Theatre of the Absurd has been my lifeline throughout my life, i.e., the concept of “things are so bad, they are funny”… There have been so many times when I should have been upset about something. Instead I’m laughing my a-s-s off. Someone says, “that’s not funny.” I respond, still laughing, “I know!”

Got to look for the humor in life. We simply have to. 🙂

    • jmgoyder says:

You are so right about the humour thing but you are not getting that white peacock – ha! I love the idea of you laughing when you ‘shouldn’t’ – hilarious!

  8. Tipsy duck in pool! You and your quacks Julie. Breathe my friend. You have to stop and breathe. As Gilda Radner always said “It’s Always Something”. Margie

  9. Sonel says:

Oh, I hate waiting as well. This is one of my worst lessons in life that I am still having problems with. LOL! Stunning shots and I absolutely adore the while pea-cock! Absolutely gorgeous bird that! Thanks for sharing again hon and know that I am thinking of you. 🙂
    *hugs*

    • jmgoyder says:

Thx!!! The photos are crap compared to a real photographer’s photos but they are obviously working – hehe!

      • Sonel says:

Oh no, never say that! I think everyone has their own style where photography is concerned and never compare yourself to anyone else. I always look at photo’s the way I would look at art and I don’t know much about art either..heheh, so all it comes down to is whether I like it or not and I like yours! In fact, I love them! Thanks! 🙂

      • jmgoyder says:

You are more than generous – I getting quite interested in photography which is why I know I need to improve – ha!

Our mommy always says everything happens for a reason. There very well may be a good reason you are waiting which will be revealed later.

  11. I think your first commenter really said it best. “Askew” seems like the perfect theme right now!

Waiting is hard! I love your flock though – looks like you have good company to wait with. 🙂
