Well it was. It’s a blog that keeps misbehaving and deviating from its initial stance, which was cheer-upish!
So, let’s get back to the birds. The following is one of my favourite pictures of the peaceful peacocks trying to break up a fight between the pheasants.
Unfortunately their interventions didn’t work!
Jane, Anthony’s niece, took these photographs while the rest of us just watched the unexpected drama unfold. Yes, I have possibly posted these before and, no, Phoenix 2 has never come back.
‘Alas’ is rather a good word which resembles ‘aha!’

Wow!
Hi,
I absolutely adore the first photo, with all the birds, very nice indeed. It was a shame that the two pheasants didn’t get along, such pretty birds.
The irony is that the female they were fighting over disappeared anyway!
WOW! This is amazing. Thank you, love, nia
I really miss Phoenix 2 – alas! He lives at the neighbour’s now.
So, the Peafowls are the peace keepers? LOL
They are the gentlest of all our birds!
wow, they can really go at it, can’t they…………
It was terrible and unexpected!
John said I am not allowed to post cock fights because i will get arrested. Are you posting from Jail? And look at all those peacocks and that white one.. wow.. now a question? do your peahens hatch eggs at your place? c
We haven’t had any eggs yet as we only have one adult pair (the rest of the peafowl are still teens). I will certainly let you know if it happens!
The Jail is quite nice – hehe!
So they need to be older? My girls are one year old, so we should not worry about building nesting areas up the top of the barn (where they hang out) this year.. c
From what I’ve been told it takes 3 years for peafowl to mature. Also, no need whatsoever to built nests – all of ours simply fly up into the wattle trees at night and, if there are eggs of chicks, the mother folds them underneath hiw wings up in the tree. Wish I could be more helap but I’m relatively nwew at this!
I’d move in with the neighbour too if there was a bully at my own house. They sure are beautiful birds though, aren’t they?
Yes, and all four (2 males and 2 females) were perfectly happy together until one female died and the two brothers fought over the remaining female. Phoenix 2 has been returned twice to us but, even though the remaining female also disappeared, Phoenix 1 still fought him so there you go – bird life!
Aw, poor Phoenix 2 – where did he go?
To the neighbours
Have you ever read Flannery O’Connor’s account of her life with her birds? If not, I’ll try and dig it up for you. Funniest danged thing I’ve ever read. Of course, she was quite the bird lady herself. Her first fame wasn’t for her writing, but for teaching a chicken to walk backward. It was recorded on a newsreel and all – quite the thing.
Gimmeee!
the birds are fascinating to me and love the pics! also love how you have used this medium for sharing your story. many of us look forward to following your story. not just out of curiosity but to know that we are not alone in our own plight. knowing that someone else has those feelings we sometimes feel ashamed of only due to a lack of understanding from those who have no idea how difficult every day can be for those of us dealing with health issues for ourselves or family members. again i applaud you for your honesty.
Maybe too honest sometimes but who cares!
though this started as a bird blog i appreciate that you are flexible and share your story with us. the pics and stories of the day to day bird life is beautiful, funny and sometimes sad. as is the life with a family member who is suffering the loss of the life they knew and loved. again i applaud you in your honesty and raw emotional sharing. many hide those feelings thinking they are somehow a bad person for having such feelings. by your sharing you are saying YOU ARE NOT ALONE. thank you:)
Thanks for your support – means a lot!
Blimey, they’re up for a scrap!
Wow that second photo is quite an action shot!
