The only one of our geese whose gender I know for sure is Godfrey, which makes him a gander of course. As for Pearl, Ola, Woodroffe, Seli and Diamond, I have no idea, except that Ola and Pearl seem smaller, friendlier and more polite than the others so I am assuming they are girls. This is Pearl who may or may not be wondering what s/he is too!
Lately there has been a great deal of flirtatious behaviour happening between the gang, which I have prudishly been turning a blind eye too. But today, with Anthony’s help (he is being taxied out for the day, and is much less prudish), I have decided to watch this flirtatious behaviour so I will know which of the gang members are female. That way I will be able to keep an eye on any possible eggs etc.
Watching gender games between geese is not for the faint-hearted.
not something I have been privy to
You’re lucky!
they actually tackle each other don’t they, claiming rights??
Yes it’s all quite violent and noisy!
i thought so, good thing us humans don’t act like this!!!
Some do!!!
Yes – would be fun to know the genders too…so you can see who flirts with who!! 🙂 xo
Yes!
I was of the impression that the gander had a bump on his head and the females not… am I wrong..? Never had geese to study but that’s what I was told… please keep a good watch and let me know…
I think that is only with certain breeds – Godfrey is a Chinese gander – the others are Sebastopols and Pilgrims – perhaps I should do some research rather than watch – ha!
Now you’ve really confused me, there are different types as well..? I thought a goose was a goose or maybe a gander, and now I find out they have different specie as well… good luck, research and observation they only way to knowledge… take photos for the research, damn this is getting exciting…
Now that Anthony is home for the day none of them are ‘doing it’!!!
That Irishman Murphy and his law… damn him…
Oh my, the next set of photos could be interesting!
No way!
bird porn again jules? hmmm, beginning to wonder about you. 😆
I am beginning to wonder about me too!
😉
I think gender games, in general, are always more serious than they might appear…even for humans.
Definitely!
I’m not going to ask why you are so certain of Godfrey’s gender.
You would not want to know. I was thinking I had a new follower, then realized it was you! I have been trying to get a better look at your photo but it won’t enlarge!
I love your bird photographs, this is amazing again 🙂 Thanks and Love, nia
Thanks Nia – I will not take any pictures of them flirting – ha!
That means Spring is on its way – yaay!
Yes – yeeha!
Geese Courtship Chronicles!
I’m jealous of all the fun you’re gonna have playing cctv to them 😀
Now that I am watching they don’t do anything except sleep on the grass – perhaps they are shy about their antics!
That photo is so great – this with gender on animals can create problems – happens all the time .. that she are he and the other way around. No wonder the animals can be confused at times.
Ha!
