Gutsy9’s growth

G9 is now too big to be taken by a crow, fast enough to avoid the pecks of the pecking order, and can fly up to the height of a picnic table or low branch. His wonky leg is almost normal and he no longer walks with a limp. He sleeps happily all night with the ducks, Zaruma and Tapper, spends a few hours on my lap during the day and is nearly old enough to free range around the farm with the others. My biggest worry is he will fall into the pond and not be able to get out but yesterday he actually did fall in and flew out quite easily.

But guess what? I think he might be a she! The reason is that all of the adult males have a spur on each leg whereas the females don’t, and neither does G9.

  5. as we did with Kitty when we found out he was a boy we added Bob–maybe you can add Ann to Gutsy’s name

He (She?) is growing up to be a fine bird. Wouldn’t it be nice if they could tell us whether they are a boy or a girl a little sooner? Imagine if we didn’t know what our human babies were for a long time….the names would be all mixed up! 😉

  7. fgassette says:

I am so glad to see the progress of G9. Will continue to faithfully follow Gutsy9.

  8. At least ‘her’ name is generic…Diane

She’s doing so well! Her natural tiara is so cute — growing into majestic.

  10. Gutsy-9 owes everything to you Mom.:) He/she it doesn’t matter, he has blossomed into such a beautiful peabird. It’s extraordinary how mothering knows no bounds or barriers.

I love the pictures of Gutsy growing up. Like looking at baby pictures when your kid’s a teenager. Boy or girl, Gutsy is glorious.

If G9 is a girl, maybe the limp was just a strut.

Love the progressive photos! A few years ago I set out to photograph a new chicken every day at the same time but I got interupted, missed a day and gave up. Your photos have inspired me to try again 🙂

  21. If any bird deserves to make, Gutsy does.

Julie, it is quite apparent that Gutsy is growing like a weed. But in all my years, I never expected to have a conversation regarding the sex of a peacock. Blogging has sure openned my mind to so many different possibilities. Thank you for continuing my education. Take care, Bill
