I think WordPress has gone a bit wonky because whenever I make a comment on someone else’s blog post, I seem to then be bombarded with emails of further comments.
So I just commented and noticed that underneath the comment ‘box’, that ‘notify me of further comments’ was already ticked, so I have now figured out that if I comment I have to now untick that box.
I hope this helps any others of you who are also getting a million emails!

If you make a comment on anyone’s post, make sure you ‘untick’ the ‘notify’ box. Hopefully wordpress will fix it by tomorrow!
Hmm. It used to be unchecked and you checked it if you wanted comments. i did that once — and never again.
Me too! But now that ‘notify’ box seems to be automatically ticked and you have to ‘untick’ it – ridiculous situation!
I am having exactly the same problem! I’m going to see if I can get that box “unticked” on my own blog.
If you just do a ‘like’ it doesn’t happen, but if you make a comment, make sure you untick the box.

I think wordpress may have automated that tick – who knows – argh! I feel like I’m in a sci-fi movie!
I went to “Settings” and removed the box that gives people the option to follow comments. The last thing I want is for people to be annoyed by getting a whole lot of my blog, all the time!!

It’s under “Discussion” under “Settings”. I just removed the box. If someone is following your blog they can read all the comments anyway.
Have tried it twice (the unticking) and it didn’t work.
I’m going to bed now that it’s 12.45am Sat here in Melbourne and am hoping the prob. will be resolved when I get up in the morning.
I think you’re right about WordPress automating that tick. A colossally bad idea.

It seems to have stopped happening but you need to check that little ‘notify’ box isn’t ticked.
I am getting lots of emails too, Julie.
I couldn’t work out what what going on as I hadn’t changed any WordPress notification boxes.
Hope they fix it soon, because I’m sure there are zillions of people who find it annoying (especially if they follow as many blogs as I do).
Let’s keep our fingers crossed they fix it overnight. (Big Grin).

I got about 100 emails in a5 minutes. ;(
These sneaky incremental updates to WordPress are insidious. You have to check what’s going on – not wait for them to tell you.
And blast, I forgot to untick the box!!!
Yes, I did that too. It is good that we can look at comments as a whole and reply to comments right on our page-saves the e-mail.

Hah, thank you Nia, I had just come to the same concluson myself. My previously unticked box has now been changed to default to a tick. A sneaky WP change? While I love reading all/most of the comments, it jams up my In-Box 😦

Luckily I did notice this change. WP is working on the blogs, the notification at the top has changed twice already, so who knows what that will be like by the time they finish. 😦

I think my ESP/Psychic abilities must have been turned on last night, Julie. Last night when I switched my computer on, I didn’t have time to read many of the new blog post notifications I received.
Those I did read, I didn’t comment on as I usually do, I just pressed the like button, except for yours. Hence, I only had 18 emails notificatons when I got up this morning and they were all for your blog, so easy to deal with. In fact, I had to delete many emails unread due to lack of time and my brother dropping in to fix something on my computer last night.

Me too, but as I’m reading, I’ve seen that only some are ticked and others aren’t. WP has been really weird lately.

The same thing is happening to us. Now we have to unclick the thing at the bottom of the comment page in order to not get a million emails. We love all bloggers but our heads are ready to explode with the extra messages we have.

Many years ago when I first started blogging, I checked that litte box, too. Oh, was that a mistake. The blog post happened to be featured, and since it was on a controversial topic, I think 5,000 people weighed in over the course of just a couple of days. I was never so happy to uncheck a box in my life!
5,000! What a nightmare!
