During yesterday I kept an eye on the mother peahen and her chick and all was well, but in the late afternoon the chick had disappeared. I looked everywhere I had seen them together during the day and the mother followed me silently. At dusk, I gave up and sat at my picnic table with Gutsy9, feeding the throng of peafowl bits of bread, still hoping the chick would reappear, but it didn’t. It would have been killed by a crow, and it would have been quick, so I am trying to be okay with having let Nature take over. That mother and child had a beautiful day together.
Today Anthony was brighter. Ming and I went in to the nursing lodge and the visit was full of hilarity for a change. Ming was in good form but he has a very loud voice so at one point a male nurse came into Anthony’s room and asked Ming to quieten down or he would give somebody a heart attack. Then we all got the giggles!
I didn’t tell Ants about the missing peachick.
Awwwwww.
(doesn’t sound like good news about the chick).
Gone.
Hi,
Sorry to hear about the little peachick, very sad.
I should have kept him safe in the house but he was so happy with his mum.
Oh dear I hope and wish nothing happened to peachick.
have a nice weekend, love, nia
Thanks Nia but I think a crow got him.
glad you had a good day but sorry about the new chick
Me too.
Sigh — that delicate balance of nature’s course and our desire to hold onto it. so hard.
glad the day with Ants and Ming was filled with giggles!
And a single day can be such a mix of sorrow and joy.
I’m sorry about the little chick but you did the right thing letting its mommy take care of it for as long as she could. I’m so happy for you and you and Ming had a really good day with Anthony.:)
I keep looking for the chick.
I agree with Laurie above. A day of mixed blessings.
Yes.
I get so sad over things of ‘life’ that happens such as the little peachick….I try to ‘toughen up’ but it’s very hard…sigh!
So glad your visit with Anthony went well ..especially re Ming participating….Diane
We have had quite a few bird casualties now – foxes, crows and our dogs have killed them despite dox lights, fences etc. I have had to toughen up.
So happy a lighter happier day ~ giggles are amazing aren’t they?! Now were his that little chick? 😦 xxoo
You never know – he still might turn up.
Well, the good news is Ming is laughing!
That’s the best thing!
Julie, so sorry about – the chick – the nature is so cruel and you did the right thing to let its mum take care of, poor little thing.
As you said .. the same day can give both sorrow and joy.
Nice to read that you both had a good visit at the lodge today and some joy …
Damn it. We’ve lost chickens this week to stray hunting dogs and we’re fed up too.
So sorry to hear that.
oh what a day to be treasured between Ming and Ants. so sorry about the baby
I’m glad you were able to have a good day, despite the sad news about the peachick. Darn!
Glad to hear you had a good day.
I’m sorry; I don’t think I could handle that so well .
When we lost one of our first chicks (a turkey) and 2 days later a duckling, I sobbed and sobbed. I am terribly sad about this lost chick but have had to toughen up.
Sorry to hear about the little chick going missing…………but really happy to hear that your visit with Anthony went well and was full of laughs and giggles and all over a great visit……..
Julie, it was a bittersweet day for you, sorry my friend. The chick going missing i konw is disturbing to you, but the day was made better by the antics while visiting Ants. That makes it a plus kinda day. Take care be safe, Bill
Oh, this is so sad. I’m so sorry.
i always cry during the nature documentaries! i have never understood how those filming could stand by why some little cub died of starvation or other situation they could have stepped in on. of course i know that they are observers and need to leave it that way. still…… we have birds that next in our eaves and last year we were out there chasing down babies that couldn’t fly yet but because there were 5 of them there was no room in the nest. as a result the adults were pushing them out a few days early. we are pretty sure that a cat must have gotten one and have mixed feelings since we have cats and know that is what they do. by the way our cats do not go outside. the first time one dropped a bird at my feet it was decided.
so glad you and the boys had a booming time!
I’m glad to hear you had a good visit with Anthony and Ming. But sorry to hear about the little peachick. Letting nature take its course is hard sometimes. I have a bird graveyard in the corner of my yard and I’m sad every time I bury a new bird in it. I wish I could save all of them.
Gutsy10, may yet reappear…. I hope so…. great to hear of a fun day with Ant…
What a day! I’m glad you were able to share some fun with Anthony and Ming.
