Knife mishap

on July 16, 2013

imageThe other day I cut the tip of my thumb off just above the nail. I was cutting up potatoes and the scanpan knife slipped. I hadn’t used it before so didn’t realize how sharp. The blood frightened the hell out of me and I ran, whimpering and bleeding, to Ming’s shed. He kindly attended to the wound with about ten bandaids but it bled for over an hour.

Two days later, when I was with Anthony at the nursing lodge, the nurse in charge was kind enough to dress my thumb properly and now the missing bit (which has never been found) has nearly grown back – amazing!

oh you poor thing. that must have hurt like hell. I can look at anyone else’s blood, but when it comes to my own I freak out. I probably would have screamed and peed my pants. thank goodness Ming was near by and that the nurse could help you also. Be careful, use a dull knife. LOL

My goodness! I’m glad all is well now.

    BE ENCOURAGED! BE BLESSED!

  3. Yikes…I hate when that happens!

  4. Rhonda says:

Same thing happened to me Jules…only it was celery. Same bit though, top of my thumb. And YES, it grew back. But, fair warning…the new part was completely numb for a long long time….not now and i don’t recall when I actually started feeling there again, but all’s well. 🙂

  5. Ouch! My knees feel weak.

  6. The minute that I saw the picture of the knife, I knew that blood was involved. Believe it not dull knives are more dangerous than sharp knives because when you finally cut yourself, the pressure you exerted on the offending weapon is much stronger and hence the cut is much deeper. Anyway that is neither here nor there, I am so glad that you had Ming there to take care of you and the nice nurse at Anthony’s nursing lodge as back up. 🙂

Glad it’s better now… sure the cut off piece didn’t end up in the pot.??

  8. so glad you’re healing up and so grateful you did not post a picture of your bleeding thumb!

  9. I hate when that happens. Glad it’s healing.

  10. Can you swap this knife with someone for a duller one?!

Clicking the like button is not really the right thing is it… I can imagine, blood not stopping,,, 😉

Though you are more likely to cut yourself on a dulled bladed. Sorry for the wound.>KB

  13. yow! did anthony kiss it and make it better?

  14. Oh my, I have to say, I would have cussed. I’m glad it is healing so well.

It is amazing how our bodies can heal.

Knives are very dangerous. I hate them and always take care using them.

At least you didnt do much damage.

  17. Wow, be careful. Though the soreness can be at its worst days later, a paper cut can hurt worse initially than a terrible wound with a knife.

  18. This is exactly why I do not cook.

  19. tootlepedal says:

I am glad that Ming was on hand.

    My goodness, Julie.

I know how they can bleed. I’ve cut the tip off my left 4th finger off many times with disastrous results. My left 3rd finger has a slanting misshapen end due to a similar cut.

I suggest you do what I do now – be content with the knives slightly blunt.

Yikes! Be kind to yourself ❤

  22. Wow, glad to hear your finger is healing. Knives we don’t know can really do some damage…

  23. niasunset says:

Oh dear Julie…. Can you imagine I cut my finger yesterday with the scissors!!!! Love, nia

  24. FlaHam says:

Julie, I am forever cutting myself, never intentionally, but because I am a clutz, for the most part my wife has banned me from using knives until recently when she had an incident such as yours. Please be careful. Take care, Bill

  25. And the going story is that the sharper the knife, the safer. Ha!

Let me add my “I am so glad you are okay!”

  26. Trisha says:

Ouch! Cutting myself with a knife while I’m home alone is one of my chronic fears. I’m glad Ming was nearby to help patch you up!

  27. Lynda says:

So we have this in common, eh Julie? I can’t be trusted with knives because I am always cutting myself, or dropping them and hopping out of the way just in time… well, most of the time anyway.
    😯

  28. So glad you did not cut of more than the tip of your thumb. Even though the skin has healed, I’ll bet it’s still tender. Be careful!!

I received a huge gash on the back of my forearm from a broken bottle. It was moving day and chaos reigned, I had no time for the ER. I used paper towels and duct tape. It worked great! It should have had stitches, but it’s healed up all right. Next time remember: Duct Tape.
