Shooting bunnies

on September 20, 2013

When I was a kid, we used an expression, “shooting a bunny” if anyone broke wind. I’m not quite sure where that expression comes from but my youngest brother still says it!

Well, so far I haven’t had the heart to shoot the bunnies and this is one of the reasons why.

Waddya mean ‘my younger brother’ says it??? All the kids say it!

I couldn’t bear to shoot a bunny, but my younger brother and Father had done so many times in the past. They’re just too darn cute.

I daresay I would learn how to do it if I owned a farm and they were eating all the crops or veggie garden.

  3. They’re adorable, Julie, and I don’t care if they ate everything, I couldn’t bring myself to shoot them. I’ve had three fawns here this summer, and they’ve eaten virtually ALL my flower bulbs (nearly 600 of them), but they’re so adorable that I can’t stay mad for very long….

“Shooting a bunny” is said for the same reason here… “pay rent or get out” the other one… shame the poor bunnies…

Julie, what a wonderful picture, and because of it I understand your reluctance. I hope for you it doesn’t come to that. Take care, Bill

  6. I have never heard that expression,,,must be an Aussie thing. Cute bunnies.

Your bunny is looking remarkably well fed. Fawns eating the bulbs, sigh. You need a dog!.. Have a lovely day.. c

  8. Too cute for shooting. And he/she appears to get alone with the neighbors. 🙂

I’ve never heard that expression either. As for the bunnies in your yard, I couldn’t shoot them either. As I write this I have a squirrel exploring my dining room!

  11. That’s an interesting expression. Wonderbutt shoots bunnies on a regular basis.

We still use the expression…it is so much more civilised than the cruder flatulating sayings!

  13. Shooting bunnies?! How can anyone shoot anything called a “bunnie”?

  14. i always think of thumper! growing up in the south many people killed and ate bunnies. from the time i was young and had seen bambi i would let anyone know that i was not eating thumper! i still am a sucker for those cute little guys:)

Not so cute when you’re overrun. They breed at an exponential rate!!

Our family would say “shooting rabbits” or “shot a rabbit” but likewise, I don’t know why.
