The Writing Room

on March 21, 2014

After a few delays, it is finally happening and tomorrow I will take ownership of a brand new space which I will call ‘The Writing Room’ rather than ‘The Office’ where I am sitting now (end of our back veranda, small, musty, messy, windowless, dark, cluttered, no longer conducive to writing that isn’t tainted with smidgens of gloom).

Ming is even more excited than I am about this transition and the naming of the room. He even read my post about ‘The Writing Room’ and praised it (and he hardly ever reads my blog!). Today, he and I went into town to find a table/desk for my new room since the one in here is old and horrible and is where, from now on, I will place all of the bills and other dreaded paperwork.

So we found the perfect table, discounted and easy to put together and, after a bit of trouble with lifting/trolleying it into the house (Ming’s back, my hands) we got it in and he assembled it and here it is!

Tomorrow I will move my chair and computery stuff in and begin to write again in earnest. It has been too long since I had anything published, apart from this blog of course, so I am relishing the idea of a new beginning in ‘The Writing Room.’

  1. Wonderful! I think it’s so important to have a “room of our own.” When we moved house about 8 years ago, I insisted I have my own study– we had shared before and it was a disaster and always fighting about each others’ piles of stuff. I love my study! Congrats and look forward to what comes from your Writing Room!

  2. Oh boy! Can’t wait to read the beautiful words that will flow together in The Writing Room!

  3. Nice desk and I think it will be sooooo nice for you to have your own ‘space’… I don’t know what your view is out the window… but it will be a light-filled room! Diane

I’m so excited for you, Julie.

    I can’t wait ’til tomorrow.

Nice big window too – hope you have a relaxing view to sit & stare at (when the words aren’t flowing on the computer screen).

Look a lovely walk colour against the beautiful old jarrah floorboards and dark coloured desk. I guess some lovely old photos will grace the wall and a bookcase to fill with your published works (into the future).

    What fun.

Oops! I meant “Looks a lovely wall colour………”.

Julie, this is such a beautiful story. You are under tremendous stress and coping with grief every single day. It is magnificent how you found a way to brighten your life. Certainly, being able to write is truly therapeutic. Of course, you know that I also have found the creative process helpful to release my own sadness. I love how you are staying so positive and hopeful. I’m “write” there with you. 🙂

Ohh Jules I am so so happy to hear about this room re vamp – I sometimes like to day dream about the day my boys are teens and I can tell them to piss off down the river so I can spend the day in my den/ shack/studio immersed in my crap of scrapbooking coloured paper and dried out acyrilic paint tubes – there will be smoking rollies permitted and John Lennon played loudly 😜
In the mean time I will sit at my little nook in my bedroom corner powered by candlelight as to not wake my dearly beloved grump while I write to do lists about never ending washing piles forever consuming speech therapy appointments and play date reminders 😔
Ahhh the twisted web we weave – can almost hear the ‘been there, done that!’ coming out your mouth from Qld hee hee
So glad you got your write on my dear lady – was it not Virginia Wolfe who said
‘A woman must have money and a room of her own if she is to write fiction’

  22. It’s coming together nicely! Love those big windows. Perfect.

Julie, What a great space, I am sure you will be quite productive, and I can see in your words that the excitment is building. Enjoy the room. Take care, Bill

  24. Fantastic! Enjoy.
BTW, I have three desks. One in my old ‘office’ which is for messy stuff. My computer desk is set up in the TV room so i have company when I blog or write emails. My writing desk (which is a trestle table) is in the lounge-room overlooking the view. That is where I do my hand-writing and creative writing. It was only last week that I made the decision to upgrade to a proper desk there and maybe lash out and buy a new computer and WORD 2013 so I can really give my writing a better chance of growing.
Great minds think alike. We are soul sisters 🙂

  25. Julie, this is brilliant news, and now you’ll be able to write that story only you can tell. Can’t wait to read it. Much love to you, Ming and Ants. Nicole xx
