Oh the joy of cycling!

on February 18, 2013

Now don’t get too excited. I haven’t jumped onto the bike yet but I am dressed in my bike riding clothes (an old tracksuit I found which seems strangely snug but it will do.)

Okay, so the plan was to get up at 4.30am and follow Ming to the dairy (around 3kms away) but two things prevented this. Firstly, I didn’t wake up and, secondly, even if I had woken up, it was too dark.

I forgave myself and decided to ride around the block (around 7kms) later in the morning but Ming reminded me that I still didn’t have a helmet. And then I got a terrible attack of hayfever and I didn’t want to contaminate my new bike with nose drippings.

So now that it’s nearly noon, I will probably leave the ride until later when the wind dies down (yes, we are experiencing those awful easterlies that make cycling so difficult.)

In the meantime, here is a picture of Gutsy9 first thing in the morning, just before I get him out of his cot/cage and take him outside to play.

Tomorrow, I will go into town and buy a helmet and a basket to put Gutsy9 in on the bike. This afternoon I will do a few laps of the driveway again. I promise!

Thanks for the picture of Gutsy. I hope he enjoys the wind in his feathers as you whisk him about in your basket.

  9. TBM says:

Yes you want to avoid nose droppings! I love gutsy 9

  10. This post is so funny – it makes me think of me feeling I should go out for a run/brisk walk/cycle ride! There would always be something that made me delay it. 🙂

  11. Love the shot of Gutsy…

Maybe a soft net over Gutsy might make him safe in a basket so he doesn’t fly out when you’re cycling. After you buy the helmet, I won’t take any more excuses, Julie. (Big Grin).

  13. Gutsy9 looks so sweet….If he could talk I bet he’d say a lot of ‘thanks’ to you! Don’t put too much pressure on yourself re cycling…Do what and when you can do …Diane

  14. I just had a vision of you and Gutsy-9 on the bicycle, both with helmets on, sort of like the scene in Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid when Paul Newman is bicycling with Katherine Ross sitting in front of him and the music is in the background Raindrops Keep Falling On My Head….

  15. You MUST take a photo of G9 on the bike!

  16. shoreacres says:

Helmet? We don’t need no stinking helmet! Honest to goodness… I’m going to go buy a bicyle and ride around without a helmet, just because.

Love the photo of Gutsy – and glad to hear you’ve been out and about now!

  17. viveka says:

Wow .. he has grown … and look very well. Ming is right – you should have a helmet .. and I’m glad that you enjoy your rides … good for you.

  18. Does Gutsy 9 get a helmet too? 🙂 You make me smile.

  19. terry1954 says:

Early in the morning it is quite cold so you need to wrap up well. In Scotland in midsummer it is light at 04.30 so is great for getting up early and enjoying the sights and sounds of nature.

I have cycled from Edinburgh to London twice with a group of cyclists. It was hard and took four days. Before I did it the first time my friends told me I would would struggle up the hills. I did struggle up steep hills, but arrived in London in one piece.

After I completed it my friends said I could never do it again, so a few years later I rode it again and finished in the same time. I don’t think I could the put up with the suffering involved in doing it again.

  21. I can’t remember the last time I rode a pushbike……………..somehow I feel if I try now I would fall over……………..lol Hope Gutsy9 enjoys riding in the basket

  22. I love that you plan to take Gutsy9 with you!

  23. diannegray says:

I hope you enjoyed the ride! 😀

I’m dragging myself unwilling out of bed every day and went bike shopping after work today. Sounds like we have a lot in common these days. (: Looking forward to flying free on my bike after I save enough money!

Cycling on the roads is getting a bit dangerous now. People still use mobile phones while driving and there are so many roundabouts which can post danger for cyclists. Cycle tracks are safer.

I am going to get riding when spring comes. You and the bird-that will get people squawking!Enjoy!

  27. FlaHam says:

Julie, They say you never forget how to ride a bike. And I am sure you haven’t, but please be careful, and wear your helmet. After you have taken a few laps, and have your bike legs beneath you, then take Gutsy along. I can’t help but imagine what a distraction he might be those 1st 100 feet. Take care, Bill
