wings and things

on May 30, 2014

I’ve had a wonderful rest from blogging (as in NOT reading, writing, commenting, replying) and, despite the inevitable guilt, it has been great to concentrate on other things.

Like my navel!

That’s Gutsy9 by the way.

Life here has become too busy to sustain blogging every day so I’ve decided to post once a week instead of once a day. Again, I really appreciate the support and friendships formed with other bloggers but I simply can’t keep up.

I think, too, I have oversubscribed to blogs in general and, especially to those that deal with grief. The kinship and support exchanged with those bloggers continues to sustain me but also makes me sad. I can hardly cope with my own sorrow about Anthony, so reading about the grief of others is very hard – too hard for me at the moment. For those of you who I have become close to, we have each others’ emails so we can still keep in touch. Please feel free to email me on

Years ago, when Anthony was younger and still milking his cows, he would have a mini-rest after lunch and that would sustain him for the afternoon ‘shift’. He would have a solid sleep for around ten minutes then get up again, full of energy!

The memories, all mish-mashed now into the present, are sometimes heartbreaking for me, but not for him, thank God. He is okay; my husband is okay; he is being well looked after in the nursing home; he is warm; when he is confused, the nurses reassure him. And tomorrow, I will go in and stay with him for the afternoon and ask him if it is okay if I lie on his bed while we watch TV ….

I like reading your blog. So do what you can do. And rest.Cute one of Gutsy, BTW.

  2. Good for you, Julie. Very reasonable and healthy choices. Congratulations, and don’t forsake your ongoing need for daily and weekly restt (which is the precursor to restoration.)

I speak from experience. Seasons change, and so, too, must our commitments of time to tasks (and to relationships / people) be adjusted to fit the current “weather.”

I’m so glad that you are comfortable with the care Anthony is getting. What a huge blessing!

  3. There is a lot to be said for the afternoon nap 🙂 Anthony knew a good thing when he found it, like when he found you of course and the power nap 😀 I am glad that you are getting your rest, I can “hear” it in your post, it has done you a lot of good. I always think of you and I was so happy to see you in my inbox. Hugs Jules and Gutsy-9 is adorable!

Loved your post. Glad you’re back. Nothing like standing back for a while and then beginning again in a new and more manageable way. Strength to you.

  9. dearest julie, i am so relieved to hear that you are taking care of yourself. although i miss reading your blog the important thing is you are setting the boundaries you need. i could not write everyday even without reading other blogs. since admitting to my own feelings of guilt at not being able to stay current with all the blogs i was reading i have given myself permission (with your support) to set limits. sending you warm hugs and love

  10. Hi Julie, I have missed you and so it made me smile to see your post in my in box! Good for you for stepping back and resting. Sending you every hope for a refreshing and energizing restfulness!

  11. Hi Julie, Glad you got some much needed rest… and I know from whence you speak… as I am just so fatigued it’s difficult to keep up especially all the reading… my eyes and head just keep bobbing…. but I try especially with the ones that I need to… take care… Diane

  12. I re read my comment and I don’t want you to misconstrue my last sentence… I meant that can only ‘try’…. and keep up with some of the regular ones … oh I guess you know what I mean… Diane

Julie, Enjoy your time with Ants, and enjoy a little nappy too. Take care, Bill

I do that mini rest too, do you think Anthony would mind if I asked you to shove over and make room! c

  16. That sounds like a lovely afternoon tomorrow Julie. 🙂 And it sounds like great decisions you’ve made for your well being. 🙂

  17. I had to give up a lot of blogs that were just too sad–yours is not one of them–I too am blogging less and visiting less–but you and I will survive and prosper–of them I am sure–you always try to find the silver lining in your situation, and that I admire

  18. tootlepedal says:

I too was thinking of you and am glad to hear that you are making good decisions. I hope that you are getting some cycling in.

  19. Hi Julie. I too have been battling to keep up with writing, reading and commenting on other blogs. Sometimes, we just need to live real life and that means taking time-out to rest.
Rest well and I look forward to reading you once a week.

I hope cutting back your subscriptions will pave the way for a little more peace in your life. I’ll still be watching for your posts, and I wish you the very best of everything. Much love coming your way, my friend, and thanks for always supporting me and bolstering my mood.

  21. Vicki says:

Glad to hear you are feeling a bit better, but I too, had to cut down on some blogs (mainly because I found them too difficult – in my case, more about time limits, but also because I found them sad).

You have to do what’s best for you. Blogging…..reading, commenting, replying and writing your own can be addictive, especially if you live on your own or are in an isolated location.

Gutsy9 is looking rather dashing and grown up now – hope he continues to thrive.

  22. Hi Julie,

I have missed your posts but completely understand your need to pull back and attend to yourself and your family.
Wishing you the best and take care!

  24. tersiaburger says:

Rest well my precious friend. You have to do what is best for you. I also only post once a week. I don’t have words or energy for anymore. Much love.

  25. Judith says:

Everyone needs a break. Enjoy and recharge your batteries.

  26. I often need an afternoon nap, I usually don’t have the time for one………………rest is good when we have time to rest

  27. Thinking of you, Ants, Ming & your Mom. Sending hugs and best wishes.

The pic of Gutsy9 is beyond funny. He needs to be blown up to poster size with some witty words.

  28. Lisa Rest says:

You’re singing my song with the blogger guilt business. Life is just too frantic to be sitting at a computer for hours a day. Thanks for expressing this so well and I hope you can enjoy your well-deserved rest from blog maintenance. Writing the blog should be an outlet for your creativity, not a burden, yes? 🙂

  29. I stumbled upon your blog and all I can add to the sensible advice and well wishes is to be kind to yourself and I look forward to catching up with past posts on your blog.

  30. Tiny says:

Happy to learn you are taking care of yourself, resting, focusing on what’s at hand and on your family!

  31. I too have found I can not keep up with reading/commenting on blogs, so I completely understand you posting only once a week. I also get what you mean about reading about others’ grief. Just deal with your own and take good care of you and yours.
