I got tagged

I don’t know how to tweet, or text, or play tag but I just got tagged by Susan at http://susandanielseden.wordpress.com/2012/10/06/i-am-actually-taking-a-tag-because-this-one-is-cool/

Now, she knows I have an aversion to awards but she still tagged me! Her punishment is the Hot Potato Award which, if you read her above post, is something she has been craving for some time.

For those of you who don’t know, the HPA is an award I created some time ago as my way of avoiding award nominations, not because I am ungrateful or ungracious, just because I was too lazy and inept to understand all the rules! The HPA is an award that comes with no rules – you just get it (if I give it to you – hahahaha!)

Susan’s blog is brilliant – check it out!

Okay, back to my texting lesson.

Lost awards and false teeth

I know, I know – I have been terribly remiss in responding to blog award nominations and explaining why I don’t want awards and now I am frantically trying to trace back to those beautiful commenters on my blog who nominated me and for whom I had already created the Hot Potato Award (some people have received this previously).

I guess I will just have to admit that I have lost the award trail/plot and cannot remember who to thank  – very sorry! I will get to it eventually.

It reminds me of my first job in a nursing home as a young girl. I collected all of the false teeth from every patient in the ward where I was working because I had been told by the very stern matron to wash them all thoroughly. I was so intent on making a good impression that I filled a sink with soapy water and then tipped all of the false teeth into the sink.

That was a mistake. It took a week for everyone to get their own teeth back – argh!

Two more Hot Potato Award winners!

I didn’t want to cram any more winners into the previous Hot Potato Award post and I would really like to give these two amazing bloggers (who also happen to be people!) the HPA. Once again, this is not an award that has any obligations attached to it – you just take it and copy/paste it to your blog, or not.

The first blogger is a daughter who cares for her mother who has Parkinson’s Disease. She does this with a mixture of glee, energy and humour, but she is also very honest about how hard this can be.

The second blogger is a sister who cares for, and lives with, her brother who has Parkinson’s Disease. Her daily blog of the ups and downs of this journey is both heart-breaking and inspiring.

Jo and Terry are both wonderful examples of selfless heroism. I take my hat off to them and hope they will accept this award!

The Hot Potato Award

I think I have been nominated for a few blog awards now and, to begin with, I didn’t know what this even meant. Then, when I realized, I felt a bit overwhelmed and underserving and grateful and reluctant. Eventually, I got consumed with guilt at not having fulfilled the various criteria, especially when I realized it was a lovely way of acknowledging fellow bloggers. Alas, except for a couple of recent nominations, I am not sure who or what or how I do this thing so I have decided to invent what I think is a rather brilliant strategy for award ‘reluctantees’ like me and that is to re-package whatever award anyone nominates me for (which is unlikely as I have so far been unwittingly ungracious) as The Hot Potato Award. Here are the rules:

  • The Hot Potato Award can only be given once (this is not Pass the Parcel!)
  • The Hot Potato Recipient doesn’t have to do anything except  to accept the award and put it on their blog (oh no, I am going to have to find a picture of a hot potato -any suggestions?)
  • The Hot Potato Awarder must state which award has been re-cooked and write a few sentences to describe why she/he is giving it to the recipient.

I am sure I haven’t thought of a few things here so any ideas appreciated!

Now I just have to go back and find who nominated me and hot potato them – hehe!

Awards

I have an aversion to awards, accolades and so on. When I wrote my PhD, many years ago now, I did so because I wanted passionately to write about something, not get a PhD. It was a couple of years before I got around to adding “Dr” to my name on the office door at the university and I only did that because my mother insisted (hehe!) I did try for a promotion a couple of times but I failed because the promotion application required me to sing my own praises across several octaves and I just couldn’t get used to that kind of tune.

So, at the risk of seeming ungracious, I haven’t responded to the multitude of award nominations I’ve received from fellow bloggers (well, three!) because, again, I just cannot seem to play to that tune. I’m grateful to those lovely nominators but something stops me from entering into that kind of thing; I hope that’s okay. I guess I also have a bit of an aversion to the various rules of the award games; I would rather acknowledge other bloggers via url-ing or re-blogging.

Am I being a bad sport?
