Just outside our back veranda there are two ancient fig trees – over 100 years old. Apparently fig trees symbolize abundance so that’s good! A lot of our friends and neighbours come and pick them to make jam so, at this time of year, I usually ring all of the figlovers I know because the trees are only prolific for around a month.

They also make a terrible mess as the birds eat them and then they drop onto the ground and turn into a carpet of goo!

They look wonderful. Do you know what variety they are? We have three varieties here – one called “sugar”, though I think that’s not its real name, Celeste and Black Mission. The Brown Turkey may be the same as sugar. They’re wonderful, that’s for sure! But it will be a while before they’re ready to eat – about six months!

How yummy to have so many. Do you get two harvests off yours? We get an early and a late.
Yes – we get huge ones first (not many) then masses of smaller ones.
I usually roast or grill mine – cut in half, then top with ricotta cheese or similar – sprinkle with some olive oil, drizzle of honey and dash of balsamic vinegar. I serve them with parma ham and salad – a little bit of Italy on a plate.

We used to have glaced figs every Christmas when we were young, but did have a fresh fig tree too. I can’t eat them any due to the tiny seeds causing digestive probs, but my family love them. They are incredibly expenisve to buy in the shops fresh.
Black Mission figs are good for arthritis I believe.
Figs are my favorite fruit .. but they are so expensive up here and they don’t taste the same as they do where they grow .. because they pick them unripened. So envy.
I love fresh figs and so miss our fig tree with it’s huge leaves and luscious fruit. So do our dogs!
When I was growing up, my wise old grandmother had a huge fig tree in the back yard. I loved eating the figs right from the tree. And she made the best fig preserves. Unfortunately, everyone in the family thought that everyone else had the recipe. Sadly, no on did, so the fig preserves recipe went to the grave with her.
mmm – I will have to find a recipe!
